Bhutan has become the first country to roll out a national-level cryptocurrency payment system tailored specifically for tourists. The Himalayan kingdom has partnered with Binance Pay and DK Bank, Bhutan’s first fully digital bank, to enable crypto-powered transactions across the entire tourism value chain — from booking a flight to buying fruit from a roadside stall. The collaboration means international travellers with Binance accounts can enjoy a completely cashless travel experience in Bhutan. Whether it’s paying for flights, securing tourist visas, booking hotels, hiring guides, or shopping at local markets, over 100 merchants across the country are now equipped to accept payments via Binance Pay and DK Bank’s digital interface. This isn’t just about convenience — it’s a strategic leap. Bhutan’s new system uses both static and dynamic QR codes to facilitate fast and secure crypto transactions, removing the hassles of currency exchange or high transaction fees. Supported tokens include BNB, BTC, USDC, and more than 100 other cryptocurrencies. Transactions are encrypted, secured with two-factor authentication, and instantly confirmed through the Binance app. Perhaps the most powerful aspect of this initiative lies in its reach. Bhutan’s system doesn’t just serve high-end hotels or large tour operators — it also enables small vendors in remote regions to accept payments via QR codes. This inclusion not only streamlines transactions for tourists but also creates new opportunities for local businesses to participate in the tourism economy. "From booking flights to purchasing fresh fruit from roadside vendors, visitors can enjoy the convenience and efficiency of digital transactions throughout their journey," the release noted, highlighting the versatility of the system. Known as the “Kingdom of Happiness,” Bhutan has long prioritised Gross National Happiness (GNH) over traditional GDP metrics. This move into crypto tourism aligns with that philosophy, integrating modern fintech with Bhutan’s cultural ethos and sustainable development goals. "This pioneering collaboration with Binance Pay and DK Bank furthers that vision by harnessing digital innovation to enhance travel experiences, empower local communities, and unite tradition with technology," the release stated. With zero gas fees, significantly lower costs than traditional payment methods, and seamless real-time transactions, Bhutan’s crypto tourism initiative positions it at the intersection of innovation and inclusivity. For travellers, it’s not just a trip to a scenic destination — it’s a journey into the future of finance.
