The idea blew up in the late 2010s with tools like Coinhive , which let website owners mine Monero ( XMR ) using JavaScript. At first, it seemed like a clever alternative to ads; visitors donated a bit of unused CPU power, and websites earned crypto. But then came cryptojacking .
