Theo Reuters, công ty quản lý rủi ro hàng hải MARISKS của Hy Lạp cảnh báo rằng một số công ty vận tải biển bị mắc kẹt ở phía tây eo biển Hormuz đã nhận được các tin nhắn mạo danh chính quyền Iran, yêu cầu thanh toán "phí cầu đường" bằng Bitcoin hoặc Tether (USDT). Thông tin này là giả mạo và không được Iran chính thức công bố.
MARISKS cho biết các tin nhắn lừa đảo tuyên bố rằng cần phải nộp và được "cơ quan an ninh Iran" đánh giá các tài liệu trước khi xác định phí tiền điện tử. Hiện tại, có khoảng hàng trăm tàu thuyền và khoảng 20.000 thủy thủ đang bị mắc kẹt ở Vịnh Ba Tư. Trong thời gian ngắn eo biển được mở cửa vào ngày 18 tháng 4, ít nhất hai tàu (bao gồm một tàu chở dầu) đã buộc phải quay trở lại sau khi bị tàu Iran bắn.
