Según Jayati Ghosh, profesora de economía en la Universidad de Manchester, en un artículo para el Bangkok Post, la administración Trump ha promovido enérgicamente la desregulación de las criptomonedas y ha defendido las stablecoins vinculadas al dólar a través de la Ley GENIUS, al tiempo que se ha negado a desarrollar monedas digitales de bancos centrales. Sin embargo, esta serie de políticas está produciendo un efecto autodestructivo: se espera que para 2025 el volumen de comercio ilegal de criptomonedas aumente en más del 160% interanual, y que países como Rusia, Irán y Corea del Norte utilicen criptomonedas para evadir masivamente las sanciones económicas estadounidenses.
Entre ellos, Irán ha introducido criptomonedas en el sistema de cobro de peajes del estrecho de Ormuz, con ingresos diarios que se estima alcanzan los 36 millones de dólares; Rusia, por otro lado, está utilizando plataformas de intercambio de criptomonedas para eludir las órdenes de congelación de activos y financiar la adquisición de material militar.
